A 6th-generation Spokanite and a lover of local history, Emily stumbled upon an old newspaper article about the Hearts of Gold cantaloupe's fame during the 1930s and 40s.
Without any hesitation, she and Adam knew they needed to help preserve the cultivation of this beloved crop.
This heirloom variety ripens in the field and has a short shelf life due to its incredible sweetness. Despite the difficulties, it was highly sought after and shipped to the East Coast. The Valley enjoyed a Hearts of Gold festival in the 30s, and pays homage to it by giving the current fall festival the same name.
Spokane Valley's famously rocky soil is perfectly suited for Hearts of Gold, retaining the summer heat and allowing the fruit to grow and ripen to its nationally renowned sweetness.
Peak season is late August to early September. Follow Lilac City Harvest on Instagram and Facebook to find out when you can swing by the farm store and taste the sweet nostalgia of this famous local fruit.
